Florence A. Kostner

Florence Agnes Kostner, 96, peacefully passed away Sunday, August 23, 2020, surrounded by family at her home in Gurnee, IL. She was born on July 18, 1924, in Oak Park, IL. Florence grew up in Chicago. She was married and raised her family in Oak Park. In her later years she lived in Northlake, IL and Gurnee, IL. Florence was a graduate of Austin High School in Chicago. She devoted her life to the care and upbringing of her children. Surviving her are 4 children: Cheryl Kostner McGee, Adrienne (Ed) Neer, Gregory (Melissa) Kostner, and Chris Ann (Barry) Smith, 5 Grandchildren: Erin, Alex, Jake, Lukas and Myka, 1 Great Grandchild: Eva, and Daughter-in-Law Dianne. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Kostner and son-in-law Phil McGee. During the time her kids were growing up, Florence (Flo) loved to do laundry with her best friend, the Washing Machine. Evidently, the Washing Machine (not the Dryer) was a good listener and her children could hear her venting her frustrations from the basement. Having been an only child herself, she had her hands full with the five children. She derived satisfaction getting out any stain from clothes; she had all the tricks. No one had to wonder what Flo thought as she had few verbal filters and always spoke her mind. Even though she had a tough exterior, she was always there to offer help. In difficult and upsetting situations, Flo would provide comfort and guidance to try and make things better. Flo was raised in the Depression; she was very frugal but never cheap. She would give her family generous birthday and Christmas gifts, and take the family out for meals. She could not understand why a loaf of bread cost more than 5 cents because that is what she paid growing up. Before moving to Gurnee, her family talked to her about moving to Independent or Assisted Living, but she wanted to be on her own. She said she did not want to be around a bunch of “Old People”. When approached about activities at the Senior Center, she declined again citing too many “Old People”; even after explaining that most of the “Old People” would be younger than her at age 94. Flo has always been a colorful character and unforgettable. She will be missed dearly by her family and many friends. A celebration of her life will be held on her birthday (July 18, 2021).
