E. John Fales

E. John Fales, 90, passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2024 in Northbrook, IL. He was born on March 16, 1934 in Lake Forest, IL to Eugene John & Betty Kelley Fales and was formerly of Toledo, OH. He enrolled in an early entrance program at Shimer College, an affiliate of the University of Chicago, under which high school students could enter college before graduating and received his medical degree in Pathology from the University of Michigan Medical School. John was a Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army, Medical Corp, where he served as a Forensic Pathologist and received the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces from June 1969 to June 1970 in the Republic of Vietnam. John was a Pathologist at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, CA for 18yrs and was a director of Hoag Hospital’s Blood Bank, responsible for storing frozen blood, a cutting-edge process in the late 1970’s. His greatest enjoyment was his time spent flying single engine airplanes and completed several cross-country flights with his father, also a pilot. He had a passion for learning and spent much of his time reading non-fiction books on investing, flying, golf, playing blackjack and music. John loved classical music and attended many concerts at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, loved musical theater, where he was a ticket holder at local theaters with his late wife, Marilynn. John resumed a love of playing saxophone in his 70’s, playing golf with family, especially at the old Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve course, Heather Ridge in Gurnee and Eagle Ridge Resort in Galena, IL. Enjoyed spending winters in Fort Myers, FL, St. Pete Beach and Rancho Mirage, CA. John’s favorite sport was ice hockey and he followed the Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks and his favorite, the Tampa Bay Lightning. In 1994, John & Marilynn returned to the Midwest to be closer to their only child, Jani and her family. They lived in Lake Forest, Huntley and most recently in Libertyville and enjoyed attending his grandson’s baseball & volleyball games. He is survived by his daughter, Jani (Kurt) Feiereisel and 3 grandsons, Derek, Shane & Kurt Feiereisel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilynn in 2019. Private funeral services will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024 at Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Ave. in Libertyville. Interment will be at Lake Forest Cemetery.
