James F. “Jim” Robbins, 90, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019 at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. He was born Dec. 23, 1928 in Libertyville and has been a lifelong area resident. He was the son of Horace W. and Louisa J. Robbins who settled in Libertyville in 1919. Jim was a 1946 graduate of LHS. Jim served with the U.S. Marine Corps in China and on Guam following WWII. As a member of the 5th Marine Regiment of WWI fame, he was privileged to wear the French Fourragere. While in China, he was involved in the Hsin Ho Ammunition Supply Depot incident on April 5, 1947, an early aggressive act of the incoming Chinese Communist Party. He was a member of the Libertyville VFW Post #8741 since l950, a Past Post Commander, and their Quartermaster for 32 years. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Cooties #PT67, Mundelein Amercian Legion Post #867, the First Marine Division Association, China Marine Association, and the Marine Corps League Detachment #801, which he helped reactivate in 2002. He was the originator of the Veterans Memorial Monument at Lakeside Cemetery in Libertyville, which was dedicated on May 31, 1999. From 1992 through 2018, he was a Coordinator of the Libertyville Memorial Day programs. He was employed as a contract glazing salesman for 30 years for several area glass companies and was employed by the Lake County Forest Preserve for many years at the Fox River Preserve at Post Barrington. Surviving are his son, Timothy (Donna) Robbins of Henderson, KY, his daughter, Kim (Brian) Watson of Marion, IL; sister Margery Higson of Bellevue, WA. He leaves behind five beloved grandchildren who reside in Illinois and Kentucky and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1940, his father in 1946, a brother William K. Robbins and sister’s Louise, Norma, Helen and Marie. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Wednesday, Jan. 23 at the Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Ave. (Rt. 176, one block west of Milwaukee Ave.) Libertyville. A funeral service with visitation for one hour before will be at 10:30 am Thursday, Jan. 24 at the funeral home, followed by interment with full military honors at Lakeside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Veterans Memorial Monument at Lakeside Cemetery, PO Box 500, Libertyville, IL 60048.
