Astghig "Mary" Simonian

April 10, 1930 - June 1, 2022

Astghig “Mary” (Soghigian) Simonian, 92, of Libertyville, IL passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on June 1, 2022. She was born in East Chicago, Indiana on April 10, 1930 to the late Garabed Soghigian and the late Ardemis (Esmerian) Soghigian. Both escaped and survived the Armenian Genocide, which had a big impact on all of us. Mary was raised in Waukegan, IL, where she met and married her beloved late husband Martin Simonian in 1954. They raised their sons, George (Claudia), Jack, and Martin, and moved to Libertyville in 1979. She was the sister of the late Coharic “Julie” Soghigian, the late Avedis “Avo” and Karekin “Dick” Soghigian, and the late sister-in-law, RoseMarie Soghigian. Mary’s passion was the concern for the well being of her family and friends. She loved clipping recipes, baking, and cooking Armenian foods to make sure that everyone was well nourished. Also enjoyed participating in the St. George’s Armenian Church bake sales. She and her husband Martin loved vegetable gardening and then supplying everyone with fresh, canned and pickled bounty. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and her brother Karekin and sister-in-law Rose. Mary has maternal cousins in France who she visited in her travels. In addition to her brother Karekin, she is survived by her grandsons Andrew, Alex and Martin. Niece Kara Soghigian; great nephew Enzo; nephews Avedis Soghigian, Adrian Soghigian (Christine); great nieces Juliea, Ani and Ava. She was grateful for and lucky to have had wonderful neighbors and friends. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at l0 am followed by the funeral service at 11 am at. St. George Armenian Church, 1015 N. McAree Road, Waukegan, IL 60085 with interment following at Northshore Garden of Memories, 1801 Green Bay Road, North Chicago, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. George Armenian Church. Arrangements by Burnett-Dane Funeral Home in Libertyville. Info: 847-362-3009 or please share a memory at www.burnettdane.com.
