Fr. Tomo Kazich

Father Tomo Kazich, 83, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 14, 2026, in Glenview, Illinois. He was born on May 9, 1943, in Gary, Indiana, to Frank and Sophia Kazich. Father Tomo grew up at St. Sava Church in Gary, where he was baptized and developed a lifelong love and devotion to the Serbian Orthodox faith. From an early age, he was actively involved in the life of the Church, later serving as director of the church school and as a Sunday School teacher. He graduated from Indiana University in 1966 and later earned his Master of Divinity degree from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in 1975. After graduating from the Seminary, Father Tomo worked for the Orthodox Christian Education Commission (OCEC), a publisher of instructional materials for Orthodox church schools. During his years with the organization, he conducted workshops for teachers and authored four religious education manuals. He later joined McGraw Hill Publishing Company in New York City. On February 14, 1982, on the Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God, he was ordained to the Holy Diaconate by Metropolitan Iriney of blessed memory at St. George Church in East Chicago, Indiana. In March of that year, he traveled to Australia to serve the Free Diocese in Hall, near Canberra. Later in 1982, he was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in Sydney and tonsured a rasophore monk at St. Sava Monastery in Hall. Hieromonk Thomas served in the Australian Diocese for ten years, where he devoted himself wholeheartedly to educating young people and nurturing their faith. He established the first children’s camp at St. Sava Monastery and worked closely with the sisters to organize smaller camps at parishes throughout the Diocese. He also established a book center to make Orthodox educational and spiritual literature more readily available to the faithful. Throughout his ministry, Father Tomo used his gifts as an educator, writer, and editor in service to the Church. He prepared the diocesan calendar, edited the diocesan newspaper, and edited numerous editions of the youth journal. For more than 40 years, he dedicated himself to religious education and spiritual growth, leaving a profound impact on generations of Serbian Orthodox children, young people, and adults. Archimandrite Thomas leaves behind an extraordinary legacy of faith, knowledge, service, and love for the Orthodox Christian heritage. Through his life’s work, he helped preserve and pass on the traditions of the Serbian Orthodox Church while inspiring countless young people to understand, love, and live their faith. He will be remembered with gratitude and affection by the many people whose lives he touched through his teaching, priestly ministry, writing, and friendship. He is survived by his siblings, Patricia Anomanni, Frank “Sonny” Kazich, and Peter Kazich; nephew and niece, Dan Anomanni and Blaise Kazich; grandnephew and grandniece, Mike Anomanni and Emily (Anomanni) Herriman; and great-grandniece, Nora Mae Herriman. The Funeral Divine Liturgy will begin at 9:30 A.M., followed by the funeral service at 11A.M. and interment on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at New Gracanica Serbian Orthodox Monastery and Cemetery in Third Lake, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, at Father Tomo’s request, donations may be made to New Gracanica Monastery, St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Merrillville, Indiana, or St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Yonkers, New York.
