Mary Sue Davis

DAVIS Mary Sue Davis, (nee Hale), passed away July 2, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Sue was born December 29, 1927 in El Dorado Kansas, and spent her formative years in Tulsa, Oklahoma, before striking out on her own to attend Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. At NU she met the love of her life, Ralph Davis II (Bud), to whom she was married for 49 years until his death in 2000. Sue received her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and went on to earn her nursing degree at Wesley Memorial Hospital. After training at Northwestern University Hospital, Sue engaged in an illustrious career in nursing, later securing her Master of Arts/Health Services Management, as she rose to the head of the medical and surgical floors at Highland Park Hospital where she retired in 1990. While her nursing career was important, her first priority was always family. Sue was a loving and devoted mother of five who adored her, and admired her every accomplishment. She was the nucleus of the family, their touchstone, and the heart of the home who made Sunday dinner in the Davis household a long-honored tradition - all while demonstrating an amazing example of an accomplished life/work balance. She was their heart, and their constant supporter. The fact that she was the neighborhood go-to for boo boo’s also demonstrated her deep compassion for family, friends, and community. Sue also loved to quilt, and made beautiful creations for her family. She also created and donated quilts for hospitalized children. She is survived by her five devoted children, Ralph Davis III (Susanne), Linda Ward (Rick), Lorna Melvin (Randy), Brett Davis, and Cynthia Davis. She is also survived by 9 grandsons, and 6 great grandsons, and 5 great granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, Her mother Ruth Hale (nee McDonald), father, Byford Hale, and sister Alicia Gamble (nee Hale). A Celebration of Life will be held on July 14 at 11am at the Community Christian Church,1970 Riverwoods Road, Lincolnshire, IL. 847-945-8824 followed by a private interment at Willow Lawn Cemetery. Arrangements by Burnett-Dane Funeral Home in Libertyville.
