Katherine "Katy" Hoover

Katherine J. "Katy" Hoover, 92, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026 in Lincolnshire, Illinois. Katy was born on March 27, 1934, in Carroll, Iowa, and was raised in Audubon, Iowa. She earned a bachelor's degree in Home Economics from Iowa State University, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, maintaining many of those friendships throughout her lifetime. Following college she taught Home Economics at Evanston High School, in Evanston, Illinois. She met her husband (Harry "Al" Hoover) at Iowa State. Katy and Al married in 1958. During Al’s career in the Navy, they moved often and had two daughters: Beth in Florida and Sarah in California. Katy devoted herself to creating welcoming homes wherever life took her, which included Illinois, California, Maine, Florida, Virginia and Iowa. Katy and Al retired to Ten Mile Lake in central Minnesota near Hackensack. Katy first visited Ten Mile Lake with her parents and sisters the year she was born. Over her lifetime she enjoyed spending summers at the lake with friends and family. The tradition continues as Beth, Sarah, and their families also vacation at the lake. Katy also held a deep love and appreciation for Audubon and the surrounding farms. Katy was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Walker, Minnesota, as well as a member of Union Congregational Church in Hackensack. She found joy in quilting, knitting, needlework, reading, and especially cooking for family, friends, and anyone who happened to stop by. Her generous spirit, warm hospitality, and genuine kindness touched everyone who knew her, and she will be remembered for the love and care she shared so freely. Katy is survived by her two daughters, Elizabeth "Beth" (Paul) Nielsen and Sarah (David) Metzger; her four grandchildren, Phillip Nielsen, Claudia Nielsen, Scott (Brooke) Metzger, and Eric Metzger; her great-grandson, William Metzger; and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Al Hoover and by her sisters, Elinor Chase and Mary Ellen Lowery.
